community-driven regeneration, through the arts

We’re sure you many of you are wondering about the name of our project

"A’ the Airts"

Our project has a title which lends itself to the Community of Upper Nithsdale.

This title was inspired by the first line of a song written by Robert Burns as he rode towards Sanquhar from his home at Ellisland further down the valley, and was first sung in Whigham's Inn in the High Street of Sanquhar.

" Of A’ the Airts the wind can blaw.. I dearly lo' the West."

'Airts' in this case means 'places', however airt is also used in many parts of Scotland for 'Art' so……… 'All the Arts' or "A' the Airts"

logo

Our Logo was designed locally by Gary Bonn. It features the Auchentaggart Lunula – 4000 years old – which is the oldest piece of Art/Craft work found in Upper Nithsdale .

lunula

The original Lunula is presently displayed in the Royal Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh and is part of our page title above.
