LANDSCAPE OF WAVES

Hosted by A’ the Airts at nearby Merz Studio, this is a powerful new exhibition by acclaimed land artist, architectural critic and historian, Charles Jencks in a highly engaging collaboration, with Dumfries and Galloway based sculptor and performance artist Alex Rigg. https://vimeo.com/172419807
Landscape of Waves builds on the two artists’ earlier shared work for the 2015 public opening of the Crawick Multiverse and from those initial points of artistic intersection, Jencks and Rigg have spun new connections in time and space: a beautiful and intriguing scaffold of ideas and thought lines.
At the heart of the collaboration is an exploration of the fundamental dynamic that wave-forms permeate all of nature and the cosmos.
In Charles Jencks’ own words “not only do the forms underlie water waves and brain waves, but also they are behind the twists and folds of the landscape, both natural and artificial patterns”.
The costume and choreography which forms Alex Rigg’s contribution are abstract responses to what he describes as “some wild ideas”: a wildness that Alex always seeks to maintain in his performance events as he often seeks to stimulate both a confusion and an interest in the public.
Alex’s approach is off-beat and enigmatic. The style of his performances borrows from many influences and genres, making reference to film, literature and popular culture.
The subject matter of the work is often linked to global and philosophical concerns and encourages its audience to look harder at who and what they are.
