at the heart of Upper Nithsdale, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.
Where is Upper Nithsdale......
Upper Nithsdale, in the region of Dumfries and Galloway, is set in one of the most scenic areas of South West Scotland. It is an area rich in social, industrial and religious history dating from 600AD. Fine walks abound and the National Southern Upland Way crosses the area.
However, the closure of the deep coal-mining in the 1960’s , left a legacy of high unemployment, from which the area has struggled to recover.
Within Upper Nithsdale we have four settlements ….. Kirkconnel pop 2100 , Sanquhar pop 2300, a small village called Mennock and Wanlockhead, Scotland's highest village, with 200 inhabitants. The total population of Upper Nithsdale is just 5101.
Although isolated , Upper Nithsdale is actually only 27 miles distant from areas of much larger populations. Ayrshire, with its population of 366,000 and Lanarkshire with 634,000. The M74 is 16 miles from the centre of Upper Nithsdale.
Some folk say that we are ‘in the middle of no-where’……….. whilst others insist that we are ‘in the middle of everywhere’!
It’s the old ‘half- full or half-empty’ story
Whatever………… We think it’s a great place to live and we are doing our best to help it on its journey towards economic recovery.
Last, but certainly not least..................we could never put a price on the support we had from our advisors, funders, the community and the camaraderie we have shared......and that's what makes it all so worth while.
